We Are Doomed to Years of Covid-19 Shutdowns!
So have you noticed, some of the same people who refused to wear a mask this last year are now refusing to get the vaccine?
Just a few days ago I was hanging out with a few people around a local establishment’s watering hole. We were discussing how relieved we felt to be able to be fully vaccinated from the Covid, at least for the time being.
One of my friends was especially exuberant and declared he was, “ready to get back to normal!”
I, being the eternal pessimist or realist or scientist, shouted out, “hold on, partner! This ain’t over yet!”
Looking to back my words with empirical evidence, a mere glance around the room revealed a young buck, with that certain vacuous look in his eye.
“Hey Billy Joe Jim Bob, you got your vaccine, yet?” I queried.
“Why heck naw!” he responded, “I’m not putting something in me that might change my body chemistry!”
He then went outside for a smoke.
We are doomed.
The only way to effectively beat back Covid-19 is with herd immunity. Generally that immunity is acquired by having 70–80% of your people with active antibodies. Right now, with every adult eligible to get one, we might have 25%.
We don’t know how long the antibodies will hold up in our bodies after we’ve had Covid-19 and/or after we’ve had the vaccine. So not only must we have this vaccination, but most likely another, and possibly several others as time passes.
And so now, once again, people who understand science, understand math and understand statistics, find themselves, victims to people who fear all of them.
It’s nothing unusual. Galileo made the mistake of saying the Sun was the middle of the universe. The rednecks of his day sent him to prison. He died there.
Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian doctor, back in the 1800’s, noticed medical students going directly from examining cadavers to delivering babies without washing their hands. So he mentioned maybe they should do that. Infant deaths dropped by 20%.
However, redneck European physicians, who were probably still bleeding people, felt insulted by the insinuation they weren’t clean. He was chastised and ostracized from the medical community.
Washing your hands. Sound familiar?
Even as early as the 1980’s we had scientists being pigeon holed as quacks, when the doctors ended up being quacks.
For instance did you know stomach ulcers are not caused by stress, but by a bacteria?
You probably don’t! And that’s because Barry Marshall, who proffered the idea way back then came face to face with a medical establishment, refusing to treat ulcers as a disease. His funding was cut, and he had no way to continue his research.
Finally, Marshall took matters into his own hands, literally. He made a broth with the suspected bacteria and drank it. He then biopsied his own gut, eventually proving, H.pylori did indeed cause ulcers!
This last one is for the couple of quacks living around here, who are spouting nonsense about vaccines themselves. They are an embarrassment to the rest of our professional medical people here. Heck, they are an embarrassment to the entire community. And given their various pre pandemic hijinks, they always have been.
And this brings me to my point. If the guy refusing to get a vaccine, is the same guy who vapes mysterious substances and is the same guy who can’t hold a job, and is the same guy who does and says all kinds of stupid things, then why are you believing this same guy, this time around?
Get it together people. Because if you don’t this virus will further mutate. It will become more dangerous and deadly to new populations and demographics. After that our condemnation will be years of masks, years of shutdowns and years of financial stress.
In short, quit listening to the loudest and start listening to the qualified.
